BRIEF has been training since 1989 and most solution focused professionals in Britain and many in Europe began with BRIEF. Many have since become significant contributors to the development of the approach.
In most approaches four days training would not constitute a sufficient grounding for future competence yet with the solution focused approach this has been the case: a four day course has provided a sufficient basis for ultimate proficiency.
The simplicity of the approach and BRIEF’s commitment to skills-based training share credit for this re-evaluation of what it takes to become a competent practitioner. It is to recognise (and celebrate) the commitment of BRIEF’s past trainees who have persevered with the self-development of their skills that these Certificates have been conceived.
BRIEF offers three certificates, a certificate in solution focused practice, another in solution focused coaching and a third in solution focused leadership. Applicants will choose the track that most interests them and fits best with their role and this choice will influence which of BRIEF'S courses they will need to complete. These Certificates are a means to acknowledge the training and experience of the many thousands of professionals who have trained with BRIEF and to create a structure whereby the acquisition of solution focused skills can be formally recognised.
The Certificates will all provide evidence of the holder’s active interest in solution focused practice and his or her ability to use basic solution focused skills in their everyday work.
Applicants must have attended at least eight days of training with BRIEF with the following courses ‘counting’ for each of the certificates.
Days of training with other trainers or other organisations do not count towards the certificate.
Courses in bold are mandatory and the others are open to the applicant’s choice
The following essay guidlines apply:
Complete an essay of 3000-3500 words demonstrating an understanding of the solution focused approach, how it is used in the applicant's work setting and including a detailed case example from the applicant’s current work. This is broken by:
You will need to have evidence of attendance at the required courses especially if the course has been run within your organisation. If you do not have certificates for all your courses we may be able to help you with verification provided you know when and where the courses were.
Once your attendance for the requisite number of days has been verified you will be invited to submit an essay as described above.
Again you may want to clarify what the essay needs to show with us before you begin.
When the essay has been deemed to be sufficient evidence of your current commitment to and basic competence in solution focused practice the Certificate will be awarded.
